Packaging With Intention: Sustainability, Ritual, and Aesthetic

By Hansheng Lee – Art Collective International
When you receive a package from us, it’s not just a box. It’s a small ritual. A moment of pause. A piece of artwork traveling from our hands to yours—carried with care, intention, and as much environmental responsibility as we can manage.
At Art Collective International, packaging isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the story. It reflects our values, our commitment to sustainability, and our desire to make every interaction—from browsing our site to unwrapping your order—a meaningful experience.
♻️ Why We Use EcoEnclose
The majority of our packaging comes from EcoEnclose, a company whose mission closely aligns with our own. Their materials are fully recyclable, renewable, and made from post-consumer waste. We specifically choose:
- Recycled Kraft mailers and boxes
- Algae-ink for our bags and boxes (yes—actual algae!)
- Compostable labels and envelopes when available
Algae ink is a renewable pigment made using algae cells instead of petroleum. Not only does it reduce the carbon footprint of traditional printing, but it’s also safer for water systems and biodegrades cleanly. We use it to print branding and messages directly onto many of our bags and boxes—it’s a small step with a meaningful ripple.
When you receive one of our packages, we want you to know: it didn’t come at the planet’s expense.
🎨 Shared Vision, Distinct Voices
Art Collective International is made up of four distinct studios—Lee Hansheng Studios, Storm Garden Studio, Chris Foster Design, and Tidy Tea Witch. Each of us has our own unique aesthetic, medium, and artistic voice. From ink and watercolor to fiber art, resin, stained glass, and handcrafted goods, our styles vary—but our values are united.
We all believe in:
- Creating with purpose and care
- Limiting waste whenever possible
- Supporting eco-conscious business practices
- Using art as a means to build community, not clutter
So while each package may look a little different—because it reflects the hand and heart of its studio—it will always carry the same intention: sustainability, magic, and respect.
📦 The Honest Truth: When We Use Styrofoam or Bubble Wrap
We want to be transparent.
There are still moments—especially when shipping fragile pieces like stained glass or ceramic works—where we have to use styrofoam padding or bubble wrap to ensure your art arrives safely. We’re currently researching alternatives (such as cornstarch peanuts, recycled foam options, or paper cushioning with added reinforcement), but we refuse to compromise the protection of your artwork during transit.
Until we find consistent, cost-effective replacements that offer the same level of security, we’ll use what is necessary with as little waste as possible.
We encourage customers to reuse or responsibly recycle anything that can be salvaged—and know that we’re doing everything we can to keep evolving our process.
🌿 The Ritual of Unboxing
We also believe in the beauty of receiving. Whether it’s a painting, a sticker pack, or a piece of jewelry, the experience of opening something made by human hands should feel personal.
That’s why we often include:
- Handwritten notes or artist cards
- Pressed flower details or botanical scraps
- Natural materials, reused fabric strips, or eco-friendly twine
- Minimal but beautiful branding—elegant, soft, intentional
Yes—we love to include a little extra magic in every order. You may find stickers, art samples, or announcement cards tucked inside your package. These small gifts are our way of saying thank you for supporting independent art, and for being part of the ACI community. Sometimes they’re studio-specific, sometimes seasonal, sometimes a surprise—but always included with care and joy.
Packaging is not about extravagance—it’s about connection.
💚 Final Thoughts: Doing Our Best, One Layer at a Time
We’re not perfect. But we’re trying.
Sustainability is a journey, not a checkbox. And at ACI, we believe in moving forward with honesty, grace, and creativity—just like we do in our art. Whether it’s sourcing better materials, refining our methods, or finding ways to reuse what we already have, we’re committed to making packaging part of the solution, not the problem.
So when you order from us, you’re not just supporting independent artists—you’re supporting a shift toward more mindful creation. You’re becoming part of a bigger vision.
One package at a time. One story at a time.
Wrapped with care. Delivered with love. Rooted in respect.
